Nu är det dags för Stockholm internationella seriefestival (SIS). Vi på babian.se är som vanligt på plats och ser fram mot en spektakulär helg.

Festivalen och dess föregångare Small Press Expo var ett av Kristiina Kohlemainens stora projekt, så det känns mycket ledsamt att hon inte är med oss längre.

Det senaste numret av babian.se som kom nyligen tillägnas hennes minne.

Corto Maltese var en av Kristiinas favoriter.

Första gången jag träffade Kristiina Kolehmainen var 1996 och det var även första gången jag var på Serieteket. Detta himmelrike på jorden hade nyss öppnat i lite lustiga lokaler på Kocksgatan på Söder. Jag blev snart god vän med Kristiina och de andra som jobbade där eftersom jag kom dit så ofta jag kunde.

Med åren har mina besök på Serieteket blivit mer och mer sporadiska, men Kristiina har jag ändå träffat på emellanåt. Men inte tillräckligt ofta. Det blev en stor chock för mig att höra att hon inte längre är med oss.

Kristiina var en eldsjäl, med en viljestyrka i klass med en naturkraft. Ofta mycket glad och ibland ilsken som ett bi. Hennes drivkraft krävdes nog för att hålla igång Serieteket och arrangera fantastiska seriefestivaler av internationell rang, år efter år. Hennes betydelse för Seriesverige saknar motstycke.

Vid seriemässorna Small Press Expo kunde man under dagarna möta henne sammanbiten och stressad. Fullt upptagen med att få allt att gå ihop. Men på kvällen flanerade hon med inhemska och utländska storheter inom seriebranschen på mongolisk barbecue eller annan asiatisk buffé.

Personligen har jag mycket att vara tacksam för. Kristiina introducerade mig till medlemmar i Seriefrämjandet vilket ledde till att jag var med att återuppliva en lokalförening i Stockholm och sitta med i juryn för Urhundenpriset i många år. Hon ordnade ett antal intressanta workshops för serietecknare och spännande utställningar och fester.

Någon gång kring 2000-2001 tipsade Kristiina mig om en grupp aspirerande serietecknare. De träffades på söndagarna i Serietekets lokaler under hennes beskydd. Jag gick med i gruppen och vi tog oss namnet Syöttösika/Serietecknarklubben. Vi gav ut ett antal fanzin som var spretiga men ambitiösa (första numret bestod av 3 volymer i A4 format). De kopierades på Stockholm Stadsbiblioteks kopiatorer under Kristiinas överinseende och hon styrde också upp en minnesvärd studieresa till Åbo.

Många av de forna medlemmarna i Syöttösika har gjort bra ifrån sig i serievärlden, och flera är fortfarande mina vänner. Det var där som jag lärde känna Micke Sol som jag grundade babian.se tillsammans med. Till stor del inspirerad av erfarenheterna från Syöttösika och Kristiinas visioner.

Jag kommer att sakna Kristiina otroligt mycket. Och jag beklagar innerligt att jag inte fick chansen att berätta för henne hur mycket hon har betytt.

In recent years (or at least since the end of the previous century) a new strain of Science Fiction has been propagating in the literary biotope. It is a new variant that appears to be written by comuter geeks for computer geeks.

The sub-genre is characterized by frequent use of concepts an terminology from the field of computer science, such as object oriented programming. One or more of the following themes are usually present:

• cryptography
• copyright and intellectual property
• artificial intelligence
• nanotechnology
• the Singularity

There is definitely an overlap with the sub-genre postcyberpunk, and many of the authors can have either tag. However, the level of technological understanding expected of the reader is usually higher.

Examples of works that fit this label are Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, Accelerando by Charles Stross and many short stories by Cory Doctorow. Since copyleft, open source and free software are highly regarded in the geek community, many of these stories are available under Creative Commons licences. I’ll link to a few at the end of this post.

I guess it’s not surprising that there has evolved a genre that caters to the tastes and interests of compuer geeks. Classic science fiction, with robots and space ships, has always had a large following among engineers and scientists. This is simply the next logical step. And the target group is growing steadily.

There’s one thing I’m curious about, however: Would anyone who’s not a computer geek appreciate this type of literature?

This is the place I post B-movie posters. One sheets, half sheets, daybills, locandines, quads – whatever I find. Also – some random movie stills. The resolution is usually good, but not perfect. Which means the quality is okay for an A4 quickie for your cubicle, but certainly not enough to reproduce the original poster.

The first issue of the Swedish comic book Utopia was released recently. It’s great with a new publication that goes beyond the realism that has become dominant in Swedish art comics.

The most recent issue of the Swedish web comic book babian.se is definitely NSFW. All comics except one are also in Swedish… But maybe you can look at Swedish pictures even if you can’t read Swedish.
