Jag blir alltid så glad när jag läser William Gibson.

Idag har jag läst klart Zero History och den var minst lika bra som tidigare böcker.

När jag läste som bäst stannade mitt tåg i Jonsered och jag fick se det följande i mobilen:

I guess it’s not surprising that there has evolved a genre that caters to the tastes and interests of compuer geeks. Classic science fiction, with robots and space ships, has always had a large following among engineers and scientists. This is simply the next logical step. And the target group is growing steadily.

There’s one thing I’m curious about, however: Would anyone who’s not a computer geek appreciate this type of literature?

Jag läste nyligen klart Zac O’Yeahs bok Tandooriälgen och är mycket nöjd.

Det är en kriminalroman som utspelar sig i ett framtida Göteborg förvandlat av global uppvärmning och politiska omvälvningar. Stadens namn är numera Gautampuri efter att ha anslutit sig till den buddhistiska och indiskdominerade Asiatiska unionen. Ursprungsbefolkningen lever i (mer eller mindre självvald) misär i orådet kring Masthugget. Det är även där bokens huvudperson, kommissarie Barsk, arbetar.

Det kan låta som en kryptofascistisk, paranoid fantasi som Eurabien, men det är nog helt fel sätt att läsa Tandooriälgen. Zac O’Yeah (alias Sakari Nuottimäki) bor själv i Bangalore i Indien och är snarast indofil enligt en intressant intervju i Situation Stockholm nr. 158.

Snarare bör man se Tandooriälgen som en spegelbild av hur västerländsk dominans ter sig i delar av dagens Asien. Eller varför inte ett svar mot den vanliga, underfötstådda uppfattningen att det globala Syd kommer att bli mer och mer likt “oss” ju mer tiden går? Kanske är det snarare vi som kommer förändras mest?

Hur som helst är det en mycket intressant, spännande och rolig bok som vinner på att läsaren har varit i Göteborg och/eller Indien.

Medan jag läste Tandooriälgen kom jag tänka på ett helt annat scenario: En framtid där det varken är amerikansk kapitalism eller postkolonial indisk buddhism som dominerar världen utan ett svensk folkhemsideal.

Tänk er en värld med blandekonomi, bingolotto, Saltsjöbadenavtal, jantelag, välfärdssystem, systembolag och konflikträdsla. Lite som Robert Harris kontrafaktiska roman Faderland (som utspelar sig i en värld där Hitler gick segrande ur andra världskriget), men här skulle det i stället vara Den Svenska Modellen som vann global dominans under efterkrigstiden. Och mörka hemligheter finns det ju också, i form av tvångssteriliseringar, åsiktsregistrering mm.

Jag kommer aldrig att göra något med den här iden, så vem som helst är välkommen att sno den. Det kan bli en utopi eller en dystopi allt efter författarens politiska åsikter.

I found this great site: Wrong Side of the Art

This is the place I post B-movie posters. One sheets, half sheets, daybills, locandines, quads – whatever I find. Also – some random movie stills. The resolution is usually good, but not perfect. Which means the quality is okay for an A4 quickie for your cubicle, but certainly not enough to reproduce the original poster.

För ett tag sedan gjorde jag research inför en serie med robotar. Då blev jag påmind om de fantastiska omslag som prydde många av de svenska utgåvorna av Isaac Asimovs böcker på åttiotalet.

Död robot och Den okända lagen låg på pappas nattduksbord och för mig blev omslagsillustrationerna synonyma med hur Asimovs värld skulle gestaltas. Köttiga, underbart ful-snygga bilder som snarast för tankarna till fantasy. Långt från de kliniska och tråkiga bilder som brukar användas i klassisk science fiction.

Lite efterforskningar visar att illustratören heter Staffan Göransson, men jag har inte hittat mycket mer information honom. Ingen hemsida eller liknande. Han verkar vara född 1952 och ha gjort en del andra omslagsillustrationer, bland annat till barn- och ungdomsböcker.

unhappiness, suffering, and other kinds of pain.

In short, DYSTOPIA is a series of comic short stories about the dark
future that may be coming, or the one that is already here. These books
will contain science fiction, cyberpunk, horror, current political
subjects and other stories that fit into the concept.

We want these stories to move their readers and we want them to matter. To
warn us and help us chose a better future for ourselves.

SUBMISSIONS
We accept submissions from anyone who has something interesting to say on
the subject, after the following specifications:
-Each book can be one story (24 pgs max) or be done as a split, a flip
book between two artists if the stories are shorter.
-The format is 140x182mm.
-Both color and black & white is acceptable.
-DYSTOPIA will be made in two editions (Swedish and English). If you can’t
do both versions yourself, we can help you with the translation.
-Send digital material. Line art should be 1200dpi. Gray or color should
be at least 300dpi.
-.TIF is a good file format. .JPG is bad (don’t use if avoidable). If you
aren’t sure, ask us for advice.
-Questions, submissions or ideas for submissions to mattias @ elftorp .
com (delete the spaces).

Unfortunately, we can’t pay anyone for their contributions at this stage.
Participants will get 5 copies for a full book and 3 copies each for a
split. Language optional.

There are no deadlines. Simply send us stories and if we accept them we
will publish them as we go along, depending on our situation when it comes
to time and money.
